Hey, left-wingers, want a positive spin on the Trump Administration? Look at it this way: Had Hillary Clinton have won the 2016 presidential election, U.S. politics might never have seen the rise of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib, Katie Porter and the enter wave of new progressive, green politics inspired by Bernie Sanders that is exciting the American electorate – particularly the young – on all sides of the political spectrum.

In 2018, many a mainstream Democrat officeholder was challenged not by an opposition Republican or even a popular upstart from a third party, but from within his/her own party. While virtually no progressive got the backing of the Democratic Party during the primary season, party leaders evidently got real smart really quick when results started coming in – and the voters’ voices were heard loud and clear.
As of this writing, it’s not been a full presidential term since the so-called “Blue Wave” which ushered in a group of new, refreshingly progressive politicians into the White House – and surely progressive politics watchdogs been more pleased. According to the organization Progressive Punch, aside from Ocasio-Cortez of New York, four other U.S. Reps received a perfect score on voting progressively in the House: Andy Levin and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, Joe Nguse of Colorado and Ayana Pressley of Massachusetts. And the Progressive Caucus has rallied around virtually every piece of green politics legislation from AOC’s first Green New Deal bill on.
Of course, only time will tell if the tsunami of progressive politics can stick around without getting mercilessly assimilating into mainstream Washington business-as-usual; AOC has commented more than once on the tremendous pressure to conform to “the way we’ve always done it” in D.C. But the history of American electoral politics shows us these shakeups of established parties come around every 40 or so years, and things are never the same thereafter.
